INFORMS 2013

If you don't know what simulation optimization is: Within the field of operations research, simulation optimization is a bold new step in the direction of solving complex stochastic problems in discrete-event systems. Via simulation optimization, you can hope to optimize a really complex system for which no mathematical model is available.
The INFORMS conference in Minneapolis had some interesting talks on simulation optimization, also called simulation-based optimization. Michael Fu is editing a new handbook on the topic, and I am lucky to have contributed a chapter to it. Also, a million thanks to Zelda Zabinsky for sharing her insights on stochastic adaptive search with me.
Hope to see more talks on simulation optimization in the upcoming Winter Simulation Conference in Washington DC!
Finally, many thanks to the wonderful security staff at the Minneapolis Convention Center who helped me find my lost (INFORMS) bag that had a special gift from my wife!
